Swiss magic: it’s raining gold – exclusive interview with Switzerland’s Michael von der Heide

Il Pleut De L’Or, which translates to “it’s raining gold”, is Switzerland’s entry for Oslo and will be performed by Michael von der Heide. It’s the 51st Swiss entry at the Eurovision Song Contest and it was written by Pele Loriano and Michael himself, with lyrics by André Grüter, Heike Kospach, and Michael von der Heide himself.

About Michael von der Heide

Born on 16 October 1971 in the Swiss mountain village of Amden, Michael von der Heide stands out for his musical versatility, his beguiling charm and his waspish humour. He is one of Switzerland‘s best-known and most multitalented singers,

winning fans whether he performs in French, German, Swiss German, English or Italian.

He has a modern sound which draws on pop, jazz, folk and rock, and melds with the traditional French chanson.

Michael seems to move with ease through all types of music. He creates images and memories in the minds of his listeners, inevitably finding the right tone and mood for each piece.

Michael has played the piano and guitar since childhood, writes many of his own songs and also composes for a variety of other artists.

To date, Michael von der Heide has released eight albums and 18 singles.

Many of his CDs have been Swiss chart hits.

His touring record is impressive, currently standing at over 1,000 concerts in Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Hungary and Austria – not to mention countless TV appearances.

He is also an actor (theatre productions), having worked with producer Christoph Marthaler on the stages of the Lyon Théâtre National, the Berliner Volksbühne, and the Zurich Schauspielhaus.

Michael von der Heide loves to work with other artists.

He sang the duet «Kriminaltango» with Nina Hagen, appeared with Ute Lemper, Catherine Ringer, Régine and Angélique Kidjo at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and has also worked with artists such as Annette Humpe (2raumwohnung and ich & ich).

Even as a child, Michael was a huge fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, and in recent years has had the honour of sharing a stage with Swiss Eurovision legends such as Paola (1969/1981), Lys Assia (1956), Da­niela Simmons (1986) and Sandra Simò (1991).

2010 is Michael von der Heide‘s own turn to represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest – with a track entitled «il pleut de l’or». The song will also be released in English and German as «it‘s raining gold» and «es regnet gold» respectively.

Michael von der Heide is currently working on his new album.
