Last week Denmark’s public broadcaster DR announced that the 59th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in the country’s capital Copenhagen. The European Broadcasting Union has confirmed the decision. Together with Copenhagen, two more cities were in the final race, Herning and Horsens. Earlier, also Fredericia and Alborg had placed bids on hosting the contest.
The three shows, two semi-finals and the grand final, will be held on 6, 8 and 10 May at B&W Hallerne, Section Hall 2, which will be converted into a music venue with a capacity for 10,000 people. According to Pernille Gaardbo, Executive Producer of the event, the surrounding buildings and areas will be transformed into ‘Eurovision Island’, where delegates, press and fans will come together.
It will be the third time for Copenhagen to host the Eurovision Song Contest. The event was held in the Danish capital in 1964, following Grethe & Jörgen Ingman’s win with the song Dansevise (Dance ballad), and in 2001, following the win of Fly On The Wings Of Love, performed by the Olsen Brothers.
The slogan for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will be ¨Join Us!”
