Dina Garipova won the Russian TV talent show ‘The Voice’. Reason enough for broadcaster Channel One to internally select the 22-year old singer from the Republic of Tatarstan as the country’s representative for the 58th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. And as it has become a habit for many Eastern European countries, songwriters from Western Europe were contracted to compose a song for Dina: What If was written by the Swedish team of Gabriel Alares and Joakim Björnberg, together with Russian composer Leonid Gutkin. What If is Russia’s 17th entry to the Contest. The country’s best results to date were Dima Bilan’s victory in 2008 (Believe), three second places, in 2000, 2006 and 2012 (Alsou Solo, Dima Bilan Never Let You Go and Buranovskiye Babushki Party For Everybody, respectively) and two third places, in 2003 and 2007 (t.A.T.u. Ne Ver’, Ne Boisya and Serebro Song #1).
Dina Garipova will perform What If in the first semi-final on 14 May at starting position #6.
