Austria has sent 45 entries to the Eurovision Song Contest to date, placed 20 entries in the top ten, and won the Contest once in 1966 with the song Merci Chérie, performed by Udo Jürgens. The best result from the last decade was Alf Poier’s sixth place in 2003 with the novelty song Weil Der Mensch Zählt.
Five entries competed in this year’s Austrian selection for Malmö, and in a 50/50 mix of televoting and a verdict of an international jury, the young 18-year-old Natália Kelly came out the winner with her midtempo song Shine, composed and written by Andreas Grass, Nikola Paryla, Alexander Kahr and Natália herself. Austria has the honour of opening the Eurovision Song Contest being the first country out at the first semi-final on 14th May.
