This year Croatia has formed a special vocal ensemble for the Eurovision Song Contest made up of young singers who cherish the tradition of klapa singing, a traditional form of vocal music originating from Dalmatia, in southern Croatia. The six-piece ensemble is named Klapa s Mora (Klapa from the Sea), and their song Mižerja (Misery) was written by Goran Topolovac.
It’s Croatia’s 21st entry to the Eurovision Song Contest as an independent country. They debuted in 1993, had a rather successful first decade with six top ten placings, among them two fourth places as their best result, in 1996 with Maja Blagdan (Sveta Ljubav) and 1999 with Doris Dragovic (Marija Magdalena). During the past decade the Croatian entries were less successful, none of them reached the top ten and the last three years the country failed to qualify for the grand final.
Klapa s Mora will perform Mižerja in the first semi-final on 14 May at starting position #4. You’re welcome to visit their facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Eurovision-Song-Contest-Croatia-HRT/102329896604210.
